Liquid Fuels and Transportation: Focus Areas
Biofuels
Drawing on decades of experience with coal gasification, we are conducting R&D in biomass gasification, a process by which plants and agricultural wastes can be converted into liquid fuels, electric power, hydrogen, steam, and other useful chemicals. Our engineers are developing process technologies to remove tar, ammonia, and sulfur from biomass-derived syngas as well as developing catalysts for converting the syngas into transportation fuels.
We are also pursuing bench-scale research on pyrolysis as an alternate method for thermochemically converting biomass into transportation fuels through a liquid bio-oil intermediate.
