Advanced Gasification

Advanced gasification is an efficient and clean method for converting coal and other carbonaceous feedstocks into electrical energy, hydrogen, transportation fuels, and other valuable chemicals. For more than 15 years, we have been developing technologies to remove impurities from gases produced by coal gasification, thus making the overall system safer, more environmentally-friendly, and more efficient.

Several processes and materials that started in our laboratory are today being demonstrated at pilot scale. We are pursuing work with manufacturers, process developers, and the U.S. Department of Energy to make these products and processes commercially available as new advanced gasification power plants are built.
