Our Vision: the Legacy of Wall and Wani

Contributing two new drugs would crown the career of any research team. Indeed, no matter what method of drug discovery a team employs, creating just one life-saving pharmaceutical would be a lifetime achievement.

Monroe E. Wall and Mansukh C. Wani made RTI home of the world’s most renowned natural products laboratory through discoveries that were more than just new drugs. As new mechanisms of action against cancer, they are the kind of unexpected discoveries that illustrate the power of natural products research.

Not content with their two discoveries, Wall and Wani have dedicated themselves to mentoring new generations of natural products scientists. From the biennial Monroe Wall Symposium to the existing post-doctoral positions in their laboratory, they have established an environment in which to nurture emerging researchers.

Now RTI proposes to build on this legacy by establishing prestigious fellowships, crafted to create long-term, exponential growth in the opportunities for scientists to devote their careers to natural products research.

A pair of two-year post-doctoral fellowships, starting in alternating years, will provide the opportunity to grow and learn through sponsored research, and a rare opportunity for self-directed research, study, and publishing. Designed to rank among the most prestigious post-graduate opportunities in medicinal chemistry, these "Monroe E. Wall and Mansukh C. Wani Fellowships in Natural Products Research" will become sought-after training opportunities for new leaders in this field.

The post-doctoral fellowships will be complemented by a visiting scientist fellowship, designed for university or industry scientists on a one-year sabbatical. Through work in RTI’s laboratories, the fellowship will prepare distinguished scientists to extend natural products mentoring into research laboratories around the country.
