Global Health Projects: Philippines

Integrated Maternal, Neonatal, Child Health and Nutrition/Family Planning Regional Projects in Luzon (LuzonHealth) (2013-2018)

Client/Agency

United States Agency for International Development

Description

This project extends the work done under the HealthGOV program. The purpose is to implement USAID’s Integrated Maternal, Neonatal, Child Health and Nutrition and Family Planning project (I-MNCHN/FP) in Luzon, which is the largest island in the Philippines located in the northernmost region of the archipelago. Through this five-year project, RTI will transition from HealthGov’s seminal work in health system strengthening to Luzon-specific, focused technical assistance that increases demand for and supply of maternal, neonatal, child health and nutrition (MNCHN) and family planning (FP) services, in line with development policies and evidence-based best practices from USAID and the Government of the Philippines. RTI will continue to provide demand-driven, gender-sensitive, and high-impact assistance that builds Local Government Unit service delivery capacities from both the top down and bottom up. RTI’s institutional partners for this project are the Philippine Nongovernmental Organization Council and Jhpiego.

Strengthening Local Governance for Health Project (HealthGov) (2006-2013)

Client/Agency

United States Agency for International Development

Description

HealthGov aimed at strengthening the capacity of local government units (LGUs) to plan, provide, manage, and finance quality health services sustainably, particularly family planning and maternal, newborn, child health, and nutrition (MNCHN) services. The project worked in more than 600 LGUs in 25 provinces across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao regions.

To improve the quality of health service delivery, HealthGov focused on health systems—including health management, planning, and budgeting—to improve health service delivery, secure health financing and increase national health insurance coverage, provide contraceptive security and logistics management, engage civil society, and improve data quality and health information systems.

The HealthGov team also included partners—Jhpiego, Centre for Development and Population Activities, Orient Integrated Development Consultants, and the Philippine NGO Council on Population, Health and Welfare—and more than 17 local organizations that served as local technical assistance partners.
