Radiochemistry Research

RTI radiochemists have worked extensively in labeling anticancer, antiviral, steroid, and antimalarial drugs, as well as other pharmaceuticals, dyes, flavoring agents, industrial compounds, drugs of abuse, complex natural products, and metabolites. We coordinate the synthesis, physical characterization, and evaluation of radioactive materials to minimize the risk of decomposition between the time that synthesis is complete and the time the compound is used. In addition, our research into labeling allows us to use such novel techniques as metalation reactions, unusual catalysts, and labeling using biological fermentation methods.

Radiochemistry Laboratory. Our special 2,200-square-foot isolation facility for synthesis and analysis of radiolabeled (e.g., carbon-14, tritium, sulfur-35, phosphorus-32, and iodine-125) or toxic compounds meets industry standards for handling large quantities of radioactive material and meets OSHA specifications for handling carcinogens and highly toxic materials. Our lab has thin-layer chromatography scanners for planar chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography units with radioactivity detectors, liquid scintillation counters, and tritium nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers.
