RTI Acquires Boston-Based Health Research Firm

Research Triangle Park, NC and Waltham, MA -- RTI, an independent research institute in North Carolina, will acquire Health Economics Research, Inc. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The planned acquisition adds 47 social scientists and programmers to RTI, which already has a staff of more than 1,950 people dedicated to health, medical, environmental, and technology research that improves the human condition. The acquisition also gives RTI a new location in the Northeast, joining existing locations in seven U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and three overseas sites.

"HER has been a leader in health services research for more than two decades," said RTI President Victoria Franchetti Haynes. "They bring with them an outstanding reputation that complements RTI's existing staff and expands our core capabilities in public health research."

HER conducts health economics and health services research, with a special focus on payment and financing, access and quality of care, cost-effectiveness, and program evaluation.

Janet B. Mitchell, PhD, currently vice president of HER, will become Division Director for Health Economics Research, within RTI's Health, Social and Economics Research unit. Once the two organizations are combined, this research unit will consist of nearly 300 people.

"RTI has a formidable set of resources with which HER's staff fit very well," Dr. Mitchell said. "We all are interested in high-quality research that informs sound policy and improves human health."
