U.S. News & World Report's Annual Ranking of Best Hospitals

Since 2005, our experts in survey methodology, statistical analysis, and health services research have produced the annual rankings of Best Hospitals on behalf of U.S. News & World Report. These rankings are highly regarded by health care professionals and academic researchers, and are frequently cited by and incorporated into scholarly investigations.

Best Hospitals Rankings

We use a well-established methodology that includes original survey data and secondary analyses of data from the American Hospital Association, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and other organizations. The Best Hospitals rankings represent three key aspects of care—structure, process, and outcome. These components are combined to give an overall score for each hospital in 12 medical specialties. For four additional specialties, scores are based on original survey data alone.

Best Children's Hospitals Rankings

Beginning in 2007, U.S. News & World Report also began publishing separate annual rankings of Best Children's Hospitals. Like Best Hospitals, the Best Children's Hospitals rankings reflect the interrelationship among structure, process, and outcomes. The rankings currently evaluate children's hospitals in 10 pediatric medical specialties.

Scientific Methodology

Each year, our researchers deliver a report outlining the scientific methodology used to develop the rankings for the Best Hospitals and Best Children's Hospitals rankings.
