Education and Training Solutions

RTI researchers develop a multimedia presentation and video game that will teach middle school students about the effects alcohol has on the brain.

We provide education and training solutions for military, law enforcement, homeland security, and commercial markets using advanced technologies that are based on solid science and subject matter expertise. We have a proven track record of working with our customers to solve technical, programmatic, and communication issues that meet their requirements within budget and on schedule.

Development Process

  • Knowledge Capture
We begin by using our knowledge capture processes to develop an in-depth understanding of our customer's challenges, problems, and constraints. We then research and apply undeveloped (or as yet unrefined) new science, concepts, and ideas obtained by invention, recruiting, teaming, in-licensing partnerships, or acquisition to meet those challenges and resolve those problems within the constraints.
  • Technologies Development
We develop technologies using a careful process of application to early-adopter problems. We work within tight budgets, schedules, and rigorous controls to ensure customer satisfaction, project success, and measurable bottom-line results.
  • Customer Solutions
Outputs of our processes can include new market creation; out-licensing agreements; spin-offs; and reusable tools, templates, and intellectual property that customers and partner firms can take into mass distribution. One example is RTI’s invention of the Familiarize, Acquire, Practice, and Validate (FAPV) instructional methodology. Over a period of years, this method was invented by RTI, tested, published, used in practice, and provided to a major customer to become the standard across their educational system.

Focus Areas

Education and training programs at RTI encompass a broad range of research and development capabilities in distributed learning, simulation technologies, field-based medical training, and advanced maintenance training systems. Our expertise and program portfolio include the following focus areas:

  • Lifelong Learning
We are developing new approaches to lifelong learning by creating, storing, and delivering relevant training and education content in a blended, adaptive learning environment. Contact: William Wilson
  • Training Development and Analysis
Organizations need to provide the best training for employees at the lowest possible cost. Using advanced-learning technology, our customers increase student throughput and reduce training costs. Contact: William Wilson, strategic planning and learning system architecture; Geoffrey Frank, throughput analysis and media selection.
  • Maintenance Training Systems
Training for systems such as the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), the M1A1/A2 SEP tank, or the M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle require methods that ensure the accuracy and dependability of remove-and-replace skills. RTI’s technology offers unparalleled interactivity, fidelity, functionality, and skills confirmation testing with our use of the first-person perspective in performing the job. Contact: David McLin
  • Distributed Simulations
Distributed simulations that are delivered over the Web are key technologies for just-in-time (JIT) training. RTI has developed these technologies, essential for lifelong learning, designing with reusable templates to rapidly produce a high-fidelity, Level-III-or-above simulation of the subject system and job environment. Contact: Brooke Whiteford
  • Sim-Patient
Our scientists are leading the research and development of modeling and simulation technologies including the development of virtual humans. We use scenario-based training to improve pre-hospital, primary, and emergency care by enhancing medical education, training, and practice. Contact: Robert FurbergPaul Kizakevich
