Neglected Tropical Diseases

RTI is a global leader in neglected tropical disease (NTD) control and elimination. Since 2006, we have worked in close partnership with 23 NTD endemic countries to help integrate and scale up their national programs for those NTDs that can be tackled with preventive chemotherapy (PC): lymphatic filariasisonchocerciasisschistosomiasissoil-transmitted helminths and trachomaAdditionally, RTI staff have technical expertise and implementation experience in dengue, leishmaniasis, and Chagas disease prevention and control.

More than one billion people worldwide are affected by one or more NTDs. These diseases disproportionately impact poor and rural populations who lack access to safe water, sanitation, and essential medicines. They cause sickness and disability, compromise maternal health and fetal growth, inhibit children’s mental and physical development, and can result in blindness and severe disfigurement.

 

Large-Scale NTD Programming

Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention

  • Strategic planning: situational analyses for the three conditions (i.e., trichasis, hydrocele and lymphedema), developing country-owned strategic plans
  • TOMS Giving Partner: coordinated school-based distribution of shoes and NTD medicines

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Disease mapping: completing epidemiological map for NTDs globally and at country level, coordinated mapping approaches, strategies for prioritizing districts for mapping
  • NTD surveillance: monitoring program performances and impact, including disease surveillance, transmission assessments and impact surveys

NTD Operations Research

Vector Control

  • Indoor residual spraying of households with insecticide (IRS): management of large-scale IRS operations, environmental compliance, entomological surveillance and insecticide resistance monitoring
  • Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs): distribution of ITNs through various approaches, including through mass distribution, antenatal care clinics, and schools
  • Larviciding: application of larvicides to insect breeding sites
  • Joint control of malaria, lymphatic filariasis and dengue: entomological surveillance, capacity building for public health entomologists and vector control specialists, building and equipping of and staff training for insectaries

Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

  • Urban and rural water supply: improved strategic planning, capital investment planning, technical design, financing, operations and maintenance, and customer service for municipal utilities and regional water authorities in both urban and rural settings
  • Sustainable sanitation: community-led total sanitation (CLTS), hygiene education campaigns, on-site wastewater treatment systems for community toilets and schools using low-cost biogas collection and wetlands technologies, household survey on impacts of improved services and hygiene awareness
  • Development of waterless toilet: leveraging decades of research and experience at NASA developing waste treatment systems for spaces with similar limitations on energy and water usage, this waterless toilet converts human waste into burnable fuel, stored energy, and disinfected, non-potable water

 

Past and Current Neglected Tropical Disease Projects

Supplemental Vector Control to Facilitate Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis: A Landscape Analysis (2013-14): Funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

NTD ENVISION Project (2011-2016) provides national NTD control programs in 14 countries with assistance for NTD control program management and implementation, strategic planning and costing, disease mapping, surveillance, and monitoring and evaluation. Funded by USAID.

NTD Control Project (2006-2012) supported 19 national NTD control and elimination programs with implementing integrated approaches for scale up of preventive chemotherapy for lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, trachoma, onchocerciasis, and three soil-transmitted helminths. Funded by USAID.

Integrated Vector Management (IVM) Project (2007-2012) supported institutional strengthening and capacity building for IVM of malaria and other vector-borne diseases such as dengue, lymphatic filariasis, and leishmaniasis. Supported applied research, IVM training development, and best practices. Funded by USAID.

Environmental Health Project (2004-09) supported environmental, behavioral, and policy interventions to prevent infectious diseases, chronic diseases, and injuries caused by environmental conditions. Funded by USAID.
