RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- Dr. Sally C. Morton, a nationally recognized statistician and former head of the RAND Corporation's Statistics Group, has joined RTI International as vice president for Statistics and Epidemiology.

RTI is based in Research Triangle Park and is the nation's second largest independent research and development organization.

Morton, who previously held the RAND Chair in Statistics and also directed their Health Research Methods Program, will lead a new unit at RTI that consolidates statistics, epidemiology and medical studies programs.

"We are extremely pleased that Sally has joined our leadership team," said Richard Kulka, executive vice president of RTI International's Statistics and Social Sciences Group.  "She brings to RTI a solid record of outstanding research, leadership and management experience that will enhance our continued growth and development into a premier research institute."

Morton has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed articles, 29 peer-reviewed reports, and nine books or book chapters on topics ranging from statistical and analytical methods to health care policy, evidence-based medicine, program evaluation and research on special populations.

She served as co-director of the Southern California Evidence-Based Practice Center and has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on a number of large health projects.

For more than two decades, Morton has also taught statistics at universities including Stanford, the University of Southern California, and UCLA, and has served as guest lecturer at the University of Southampton in England. She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and was selected as RAND Health's "Mentor of the Year" in 2003.

"Statistics and epidemiology have always been at the forefront of RTI, from its inception to the present. I am excited and honored to join in this history and to work with such a talented group of individuals," Morton said.

Morton earned a bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences, a master's degree in operations research and a doctorate in statistics from Stanford University, as well as a master's in statistics from the London School of Economics.
