Strengthening Local Governance in Iraq
Since April 2003, RTI International's Local Governance Project has supported efforts to strengthen government in Iraq at the local, municipal, and provincial levels, working under contract with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Project advisors work to improve governmental management and administration, provide training and technical assistance on the roles and functions of government officials and agencies, and support the establishment of a legal framework for a democratic, representative, and decentralized government. The overall aim of the project is to assist Iraqi efforts to establish local government that is transparent, accountable and responsive to constituents. Through their involvement in provincial reconstruction teams, RTI project advisors directly assist democratically elected council members and government departments at the neighborhood, district, city, and provincial levels of government. Project staff members support a variety of efforts by nongovernmental organizations, civil society organizations, and a recently formed local government association, which project advisors helped establish. One of the project's principal activities is providing training to local government officials in a number of core competencies at the basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. The project also sponsors conferences for sharing information and knowledge and for addressing problems within specified fields. USAID Web Site Links
