Michael Beard Receives ASTM's Moyer D. Thomas Award
Research Triangle Park, NC -- RTI researcher Michael Beard is the 2002 recipient of the Moyer D. Thomas Award given by a committee of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM). The award is presented by ASTM's Committee D22 on Sampling and Analysis of Atmospheres in recognition of outstanding achievement in the standardization of the sampling and analysis of atmospheres.
The award was presented at the ASTM meeting in Norfolk, VA, earlier this fall.
As a research environmental chemist in Microanalytical Sciences, Beard is a specialist in the development and evaluation of analytical methods for monitoring chemical and physical characteristics of water, air, and waste. In particular, he has been active in developing methods and quality assurance procedures for asbestos in the environment. In 2001, he was co-editor on a major ASTM publication on asbestos analysis, a book that also included contributions from three of his research colleagues at RTI.
Before joining RTI, Beard was a chemist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for more than 25 years and before that he worked as a chemist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Florida. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University, with a B.S. in chemistry. In addition to ASTM, he is a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the Environmental Information Association.
The ASTM Committee D22 on Sampling and Analysis of Atmospheres has about 300 members. Its scope includes the promotion of knowledge; the development of test methods, practices, guides, and terminology pertaining to sampling and analysis of atmospheres; the interpretation of data; the standardization of recognized and practiced methods for measuring atmospheric quality; and the sponsoring of discussions among those active in the study of air quality.
