In 1997, RTI released a report titled School-Based Drug Prevention Programs: A Longitudinal Study in Selected School Districts, written by researchers Suyapa Silvia, Judy Thorne, and Christine Tashjian. Ordering information is below.
The main results of this 5-year study are:
- Across all districts studied, drug prevention programs were found to have little or no effect on the extent of drug use among students
- Extensive programs with a wide variety of activities sustained over the long term appear to have modestly positive impacts
- No programs were found that were as extensive as other researchers have suggested would be needed to achieve significant positive impacts
- There was a great deal of inconsistency, even within school districts and even within individual schools, in the extent and quality of implementation. In part, this is due to a lack of resources and training.
The study was conducted in 19 school districts selected for their variety in amount and type of prevention instruction and activities offered to students. In each district, a sample of students was selected for follow-up over a 4-year period to collect information about their participation in the prevention programs and their experience with drugs.
