Nanofibers

Li Han is using our electronic scanning electron microscope to look at nanofibers.

Nanofiber research at RTI focuses on highly functionalized dendritic and hyperbranched polymers. We have a state-of-the-art electrospray facility and conduct both pure and applied research into nanocomposite films and the electrospinning of nanofibers. Other areas of study include

  • Novel polymer processing techniques and nanoscale fillers to enable high-barrier packaging films for specialized applications. We are developing technologies for minimal oxygen/water intrusion, oxygen or other gas mopping, and new techniques for multilayer coextrusion that can be applied to the packaging of food and pharmaceuticals.
  • Imprinting polymers in fiber (including microfiber and nanofiber) geometries to maximize the surface area for appropriate applications.
  • Environmental degradation of polymers due to ultraviolet radiation and exposure to terrestrial and marine environments.
  • Controlled modification of gas transport behavior of thermoplastic matrices and controlled release behavior of polymers. This technique could enable application of nanocomposites in air-cleaning membranes, delivery devices for bioactive compounds, and water purification applications.
