Methods Development and Evaluation

Owen Crankshaw uses an electron microscope to examine asbestos fibers.

Our staff translate information from testing as well as participant inquiries into recommendations for improving methods and training analysts to ensure optimal performance and compliance with program and client goals. We develop methods protocols based on the best information available and then collaboratively test and evaluate these protocols with other cooperating laboratories.

When appropriate, our staff modify, recommend improvements for, and prepare final protocols. We can also modify methods protocols to meet special client needs for unique materials.

Focus Areas

  • Asbestos
RTI is a leader in developing methods to help government and commercial interests analyze asbestos in a variety of environmental samples and materials. We have examined different protocols for monitoring asbestos in bulk insulation and other building materials, in dust and air, and that use unique analytical techniques. Our research capabilities, our expertise, and our involvement with several national proficiency testing programs provide us with a unique opportunity to comprehensively review the performance of asbestos monitoring methods.
