Malaria
We apply diverse interventions to help control malaria. To build effective malaria control programs in Africa and Asia, we support implementation of vector control programs, operational research, entomological and epidemiological surveillance, and improved targeting for interventions, as well as environmental assessments, compliance inspections, and monitoring.
Since 2006, RTI has been the lead implementing partner for Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) supported by the President's Malaria Initiative, which is under contract to the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The IRS program has protected more than 128 million people in 17 countries from malaria-carrying mosquitoes. In 2006, approximately 2.4 million people in Africa were protected against malaria. With support from the President’s Malaria Initiative, that number grew to almost 32 million in 2010 by direct spraying of almost 7.5 million structures in that year alone.
