Distributed Simulations

Distributed simulations that are delivered over the Web are a key to creating just-in-time training. In addition to broad availability and up-to-date training, these simulations can also be operated in stand-alone situations where the learner doesn’t have Internet access.

We have developed simulations to address the challenge of helping students successfully apply knowledge gained through training. These simulations focus on learning by doing, an adult learning principle well established as an effective approach to training.

We have developed a four-phased approach to learning by doing: Familiarize, Acquire, Practice, and Validate (FAPV):

  • Familiarize yourself with the skill environment, absorbing knowledge about vocabulary, tools, the people, and/or the equipment involved in applying the skill.
  • Acquire the skill, being led step by step through the process.
  • Practice the skill, learning how to generalize from the examples used to apply the skill to other scenarios, but with available assistance and immediate feedback.
  • Validate the skill, demonstrating mastery in one or more randomly selected scenarios. Computer-generated After Action Reviews (AARs) help learners understand the strengths and weaknesses of their performance. The AARs can be validated by a proctor and shipped back over the Internet to a shareable courseware object reference model (SCORM)-compliant learning management system for review by a remote instructor.

Users can test each of the four FAPV model simulations at the FAPV demonstration site.

Keeping the Learner Motivated

Our simulations implement immersive training by using highly interactive 3D environments that allow a user to experience situations and manipulate job materials and equipment as though acting in the actual, physical environment. We have developed tools, processes, and reusable templates to rapidly produce a high fidelity (Level III or above) simulation of the system and job environment.

Our processes result in a high fidelity experience carefully orchestrated to maximize student productivity and retention. Using these simulations, users can interactively practice concepts in an environment far more engaging than traditional training methods (online manuals or VCR video). In addition to facilitating user skill acquisition, these simulations also teach the user how to use the technical manuals.

Distant Instructors

To address the challenge of distant instructors, we are developing intelligent tutoring capabilities including hints, practice reinforcement, and interactive After Action Reviews that provide links to remedial training. We also provide tutorials and extensive help functions to remove barriers to learning that arise from student/instructor distance.
