Distributed Simulations
Distributed simulations delivered over the Web are key to enabling just-in-time, just-in-place training or assessment. In addition to being broadly available and up-to-date, these simulations can be operated in standalone situations where the user doesn't have continuous web access.
We develop distributed simulations using platform-independent tools. Our approach (1) minimizes the need for users to download special software to run the simulations and (2) allows users to run the simulations on many different platforms, including laptops, tablets, and mobile devices.
Keeping the User Motivated
Our simulations are interactive and enable the user to experience situations and manipulate job materials and equipment as though acting in an actual, physical environment. We have developed tools, processes, and reusable templates to rapidly produce a high-fidelity (Level III or above) simulation of the system and task environment.
Our processes result in an engaging experience carefully designed to maximize user productivity and retention. Using these simulations, it is possible to interactively practice concepts in an environment far more engaging than traditional classroom-based training methods such as didactic teaching, manual reading, or passive video. As just one example, we are currently developing an application for monitoring users' ongoing mental and physical state on a readily available mobile device using engaging questionnaires, survey instruments, games, and simulations.
Distant Instructors
To address the challenge of remote instructors, we are developing intelligent tutoring capabilities such as hints, practice reinforcement, recommendations to more complex situations, and interactive after-action reviews that provide links to remedial training. We also provide tutorials and extensive help functions that remove barriers to learning caused by instructor distance.
