Iraq Sub-National Governance Jobs
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded RTI a contract to provide local governance support in post-war Iraq, which will foster social and political stability by helping meet citizens' basic needs within their communities (see project announcement).
The project, "Iraq Sub-National Governance and Civic Institution Support Program," will identify basic service delivery needs and design and implement programs to address those needs. RTI will work with Iraqi citizens to facilitate citizen input and build consensus for local government services and accountability.
"RTI has an amazing opportunity to truly improve the human condition by working on these two projects," said RTI President Victoria Haynes. "I am truly proud of our staff, and our institution, that we can be one of the select few organizations that can contribute to the world through these projects. I commend the staff throughout RTI who have the demonstrated excellence and leadership to propose, to win, and to carry these projects out, and to live up to the name RTI International."
Work in Iraq will only begin after the region is deemed safe by U.S. government officials. However, preparations to begin the work will start immediately, including an advance team starting up in Kuwait very shortly.
The Sub-National Governance support project consists of four components:
- Assessing the needs for basic human services (water, sanitation, health, education); designing and implementing programs to improve services
- Building the capacities of local administrations
- Developing mechanisms and institutions for citizens to participate in local government (hold government accountable) and building the capacities of civic institutions to participate in political processes
- Administering a small-grants program for services improvements and community group projects.
