RTI Scientist Receives '40 Under 40' Award from Triangle Business Journal
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- Nicholas Oberlies, Ph.D., a research chemist in organic and medicinal chemistry at RTI International, has been named one of the top 40 business leaders under 40 years of age by the Triangle Business Journal. In presenting the award in the May 28 issue, the journal acknowledged Dr. Oberlies' ability to balance work with his family and community life.
Oberlies' professional accomplishments include winning a prestigious grant from the American Cancer Society to screen mushrooms for their anticancer properties, successfully applying to make RTI's Natural Products Laboratory a National Historic Chemical Landmark, and serving as chairman of the organizing committee for the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Pharmacognosy.
Furthermore, Dr. Oberlies continues to strengthen current research activities at the Natural Products Laboratory, which is a unique facility dedicated to the discovery of new and promising bioactive agents in nature.
Oberlies' future goals for the Natural Products Laboratory include expanding its research portfolio into the investigation of diseases beyond cancer and contributing significant discoveries to the field of organic and medicinal chemistry. "I like to try angles that others have not pursued. I am often frustrated that many people will tell you all the reasons why something cannot be done. Instead, I like to figure out how to make things happen," he said.
