RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – RTI International's commitment to resource conservation earned two “Green Awards,” presented by the Triangle Business Journal and Nicholas School of Engineering at Duke University.

The awards, in their first year, recognized 20 triangle-area businesses that demonstrated commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.

RTI was recognized as the "Nonprofit Business of the Year" and in the "Commercial New Construction Project" category for its new office building that is designed to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification upon completion later this year.

The awards were presented Oct. 23, at the North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh.

RTI was recognized for its expanded sustainability and conservation efforts during 2008, which invested in renewable and efficient energy products and practices to limit carbon emissions from energy consumption. Those efforts included purchasing NC GreenPower, using higher efficiency HVAC controls and equipment, and promoting alternate commuting methods.

RTI contributes $250 per month to NC GreenPower, which adds 10,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy to the electric supply each month. Money paid to the program goes to independent energy producers to supply renewable energy. RTI receives its renewable energy from Duke Energy.

During the past summer, in response to North Carolina’s severe drought, RTI reduced water consumption by one-third by installing water saving equipment, including dual flush toilets, low flow urinals, sink aerators, and low flow shower heads throughout RTI’s main campus.

Additionally, as part of its annual efforts to promote alternative commuting, RTI provided monthly subsidies of up to $100 to more than 225 staff members during 2008 to offset the cost of taking a bus, train or vanpool to work on a regular basis. RTI also provides showers, lockers and bike racks for those who bike to work.

Among its many other environmental conservation efforts, RTI also recycles refrigerators, refrigerants, computers, and printer ink and toner cartridges in addition to standard recycling of paper, cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic.
