Michele L. Ostraat

Senior Director, Center for Aerosol and Nanomaterials Engineering

Michele Ostraat, PhD, has more than 15 years of aerosol science and nanotechnology experience creating, managing, and leading innovative programs to establish new products and markets. Her expertise includes aerosol technology; nanoparticle applications; submicron particle processing; portable nanoparticle detection; occupational safety and health of nanoparticles; and inhalation toxicology. She is experienced in integrating emerging market needs with technology to focus the vision and strategies of organizations toward market development and commercialization. Dr. Ostraat was the project manager of a multiphase program for the Nanoparticle Occupational Safety and Health Consortium consisting of more than 16 industrial nanoparticle companies and government agencies. She also served as the committee co-chair on the NanoHealth Enterprises Biological Interactions working group and participates in the ISO TC229 Nanotechnologies Working Group on Health, Safety, and Environmental Aspects of Nanotechnologies. Dr. Ostraat is the principal investigator of the Nanomaterial Registry project to develop an authoritative web-based registry on the interactions of nanomaterials. She recently returned from a 10-week trip to Saudi Arabia where she worked to develop business strategies and engage Saudi industry to launch an applied research entity within the Kingdom.

Education

PhD, Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology; MS, Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology; BS (summa cum laude), Chemistry, Trinity University.
