Keeping it Local: Reforming Governance in Iraq

In the summer of 2010, 66% of Iraqis taking a survey identified the lack of basic services as their single biggest problem. Not unemployment. Not security. Provincial governments have struggled to take on the expanded roles assigned to them by a new law passed in 2008. Through the third phase of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Local Governance Program (2009-2011), RTI is supporting local governments to take on these new responsibilities. Results are already evident in the increased capacity of provincial councils and the growing opportunities for citizen input.

Catalyzing Economic Opportunity and Enterprise Development in El Salvador

Although El Salvador's economy has been growing steadily, the growth has not been even. To achieve more broad-based economic opportunity, RTI is leading the Municipal Competitiveness Project, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The capacity-building activities carried out under the project will help municipalities attract businesses and private investment and generate jobs.

Strengthening Local Leadership Along Ecuador's Border

A new U.S. Agency for International Development project in Ecuador strives to strengthen local capacity in municipal governance and increase citizen participation. The project primarily targets towns along the northern border with Colombia that face heightened levels of insecurity and weak government presence, but will also collaborate with national-level Ecuadorean institutions.

Tracking Killers: The Burden of Disease from Hepatitis A and E

In the global health fight, epidemiologists are like crime scene investigators. They pore over the trail of clues left from death and disease, and look for patterns to anticipate where it will strike next. Their master file is the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project. RTI researcher David Rein is helping GBD add two viruses, hepatitis A and E, to its body of evidence.
