Middle School Matters: Engaging Communities in Senegal to Support Education for All Children

RTI is working as a subcontractor to the Academy for Educational Development (AED) to assist Senegal's Ministry of Education in increasing the number and quality of middle schools in rural areas, as well as improving girls' enrollment rates. Under this U.S. Agency for International Development-funded project, RTI is helping the government formulate and implement school decentralization policies and also is mobilizing communities to construct, manage, and support neighborhood middle schools.

Senegal's Entrepreneurs Build Water and Sanitation for Health

Senegal's rural villages will see new revenues and health benefits from a project that focuses on sustainable approaches to developing small-scale water supply and sanitation service providers. With funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, RTI will boost entrepreneurship and communicate health information beginning in the Casamance region, where water and sanitation services reach less than half of the rural population and many villages not at all.

Tackling Coal-Fired Power Plant Emissions in Shandong Province, China

RTI is building on its experience in Shandong Province, China, by working with the Shandong Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau (SEPB) to investigate the feasibility and facilitate implementation of flue gas denitrification (deNOx) technology used in the United States at a selected coal-fired power plant in the province. This project will help SEPB assess the potential for installing deNOx technology to reduce air pollutant emissions from coal-fired power plants throughout Shandong Province.

Early Detection of Reading Difficulties in Mali

Under the U.S. Agency for International Development's Road to Reading Program/Programme Harmonisé d'Appui au Renforcement de l'Education (PHARE), RTI is leading an initiative to improve assessment of student literacy and numeracy. As a subcontractor to Education Development Center, RTI will use the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA), a 15-minute oral test, to evaluate students' foundation literacy skills. RTI will also pilot the Early Grade Mathematics Assessment (EGMA), similar to EGRA. Results from the assessments will assist in informing PHARE's teacher training interventions.
