Harnessing the Power of Technology for Learning

Technology is no longer just for techies. Access to the Internet and to mobile telephony is growing around the world and opening up doors for enhanced training, learning, and communications to promote development. RTI has performed studies and interventions that show how tailored information and communication technology (ICT) tools can transform education and good governance practices even in the most remote areas of the poorest countries.

Mitigating the Risk of HIV Infection and the Effects of HIV in Zimbabwe's Orphans and Vulnerable Children

RTI and collaborators will expand an intervention study in Zimbabwe aimed at reducing high-risk sexual behavior in adolescent female orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) (16-19 years) to prevent the contraction of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well as unintended pregnancy. The study will enroll 650 HIV-infected female OVC to investigate whether the intervention can also reduce secondary transmission of HIV.

Help for the Vulnerable: Learning Interventions for Orphans in South Africa

To study the impact that vulnerability has on learning, and to identify factors related to school performance among orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa, RTI and collaborators will conduct baseline classroom and household studies in several municipalities. The findings will guide the design of learning-support interventions in areas of KwaZulu Natal that are predominantly rural and that face some of the highest poverty and unemployment rates in South Africa.

Searching for the People's Water Solution

The Ripple Effect project—implemented by the Acumen Fund and the design firm IDEO, and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—aims to identify and develop commercial solutions to water transport and storage challenges. Critical to these solutions will be designs that are based on the needs, aspirations, and behaviors of the poor. RTI will monitor and evaluate The Ripple Effect, using its expertise from impact evaluation of water and sanitation projects in India and across South Asia.
