RTI Fellow Seminar:
GeoDa and Beyond—Towards Cyberinfrastructure for Spatial Data Analysis
May 11, 2009; Research Triangle Park, NC
RTI International and the RTI Fellow Program are proud to sponsor an RTI Fellow Seminar on the campus of our Research Triangle Park headquarters, May 11, 2009, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. The seminar, titled "GeoDa and Beyond: Towards Cyberinfrastructure for Spatial Data Analysis," will be delivered by Luc Anselin, Ph.D., a world-renowned geographer, spatial statistician, and spatial econometrician.
Seminar Abstract
Dr. Anselin will present some ideas on the development of a cyberinfrastructure for advanced spatial data analysis. After a brief historical overview of efforts to add spatial statistical and spatial econometric functionality to GIS, he will outline several recent software developments ongoing at the GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation. These include the open source and cross-platform version of GeoDa, openGeoDa; an open source library of spatial analytical modules written in the Python language, PySAL; and spatial analytical Web services. Anselin will discuss several conceptual and methodological issues pertaining to the implementation of the spatial analytic cyberinfrastructure as a collection of integrated Web services. He will illustrate these issues by using the initial prototype. Anselin will conclude the talk with some ideas about future directions and then open the forum for questions and discussion with the audience.
Speaker Biography
Anselin, an economist by training, is founding director of Arizona State University's School of Geographical Sciences. He is also director of the GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation at Arizona State University and the developer of SpaceStat and GeoDa software. Anselin's work in mathematics, econometrics and computational science and his dedication to sharing and teaching have fostered the wider application of spatial analytic methods in the social sciences and humanities. In November 2006, he received the prestigious Alonso Memorial Prize for Innovative Work in Regional Science. In 2008, he was elected as a Member of the National Academy of Sciences in the Human Environmental Sciences section.
