Pan African Malaria Vector Control Conference

Oct 25-29, 2009; Zanzibar, Tanzania

What

The Pan African Malaria Vector Control Conference will bring together approximately 150 of the leading malaria control scientists and national malaria program managers from more than 18 African countries. Participants will share experiences and the latest science on vector control, and best practices for using effective malaria control interventions including indoor residual spraying to reduce malaria impact on morbidity and mortality.

Each country represented will share achievements, lessons and challenges they face implementing vector control programs. Experts in vector control will present some of the latest cutting edge science including results, constraints and needs for the future.

In Zanzibar, where the conference is being held, the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative in partnership with the Government and RTI have achieved more than 90 percent reduction in malaria transmission, while across 14 other countries, national governments have covered more than 6 millions structures and protected more than 23 million people.

Why

Each year, malaria kills more than 1.2 million people worldwide, and translates into a child dying every 30 seconds. It is estimated to account for a yearly economic loss of close to $12 billion. Indoor Residual Spraying together with other effective interventions against malaria is known to be as cost effective as other public health interventions such as immunizations and micronutrient delivery.

Who

Speakers available for interviews at the conference include Dr. Luis Gomes Sambo, director of World Health Organization Africa Regional Office; Dr. Awa Coll-Seck, executive director of Roll Back Malaria; Admiral Timothy Ziemer, coordinator of U.S. President's Malaria Initiative, Dr. Victoria Haynes, president and CEO of RTI International, professor Jonathan Lines, Drs.
